It is good for parents to know that a newborn photo session is so different from most types of photography sessions. But what can you expect?

Well, one of the main things that I explain to parents of new babies is that these sessions take considerably longer. They can range from about one hour to four hours long. On average, most sessions are about two to two and a half hours long, but it really depends on how sleepy and settled baby is. On the longer sessions, most of that time is spent getting baby settled, fed, changed and just sleepy.

It is good to know that the studio will normally be pretty warm to keep baby comfortable.

Another big difference, is that for my sessions, you really do not have to bring outfits or props. I provide outfits, props, headbands, bonnets, wraps and just about everything needed to style the shoot.

Also, it is very helpful to prepare ahead the morning of the session. If at all possible (and we know baby is in charge) try to keep baby awake some that morning. It can also be helpful to bath them and feed them just prior to leaving home as well as dress them in loose clothing that is easy to remove. These things can help settle baby and have them sleepy when they arrive at the studio.

All of these and more are mentioned in my what to expect guide that I send out to every client when they book a newborn session with me. But it is also very important to remember that newborns are unpredictable and basically in charge. The main thing is to relax, don't stress and just enjoy the experience.
