I have so many parents that wait until their baby is born before they contact me to schedule a newborn session, which is understandable. The issue with this is that most professional newborn photographers have a limited space and time available for newborn sessions because they can typically take two to four hours. In addition to that, newborn sessions are best done before baby is two weeks old, which limits the timeframe even more. I recommend contacting your photographer prior to baby's birth so that you are already on their calendar and once baby is born, you can confirm a date and time.

Photographing a newborn before they are two weeks old helps in a few ways. First they typically tend to sleep better and for longer periods within that time frame. Second they are still used to being curled up in a warm tight space (momma's womb) and are easier to curl into those sweet newborn poses you see. And lastly, your baby changes so fast right before your eyes, so quickly, that you almost can't see all the changes, so you want to capture that newborn stage as soon as possible after birth. That doesn't mean that if you miss that window, you can't still capture them as newborns. Some babies can still be sleepy and curly for several weeks. So if you miss those first couple of don't fret, just get it scheduled!
